VIVA LA TANGOMANÍA

t’s no secret that the most renown and loved Argentine export is the -by now- ubiquitous tango. In the past ten years, the tango mania has happily infected the world with pilgrimages to Argentina from as far flung shores as Japan, Russia and now, even the Chinese; tango mania is definitely here to stay.
For years now, we have seen successful tango dance exhibitions here in San Miguel but for the first time, we were privileged to assist “tango theater” thanks to a magnificent performance by the Buenos Aires born Alicia Rappoport last October in the VC & Friends space on Hernandez Macías. The evening was magical.
The first half of the evening was pure classic tango with a brilliantly combined atmosphere of cabaret and theater; Rappoport not only thrilled us with her magnificent operatic trained voice, but much to our surprise, her excellent acting abilities in performing to a full house, the dramatic story of a prostitute, the low life in early 20th century Buenos Aires with tragic and lost love affairs. She sang and acted out the wonderful Carlos Gardel classics including the syncopated milongas. Her performance was dramatic and sensuous, keeping the audience enthralled.
The musical accompaniment was equally impressive with Aldo Suárez on base, Mauro Ledesma on Piano and the incredible Gabriel Fernández on the bandoneon, an instrument without which there just wouldn’t be tango.
The second half of the evening was a “Tribute to Piazzolla” with the “Reborn in Buenos Aires NewTango”. As a music critic wrote, “Alicia Rappoport is without a doubt, one of the leading advocates of “New Tango”. Astor Piazzolla (1921-1992), was world renown for the style in which he combined traditional tango with jazz, classical music and lyrics from famous poets such as Horacio Ferrer, Eladia Blazquez, Jorge Luis Borges and Pablo Neruda. Born in Argentina, Piazzolla lived and performed all over the world. Biographers estimate that Piazzolla wrote around 3000 pieces and recorded about 500”.
Alicia Rappoport started her performance tours in the Museo de la Ciudad de Queretaro theatre before moving on to being part of the Cervantino Festival in Celaya and performing in Comonfort, in Dr. Mora, Santa Catarina, San Felipe, all in the State of Guanajuato. She will continue her tour in other Mexican cities before moving on to the United States. Interestingly enough, this artist resides here in San Miguel de Allende, which continues to grow in the incredible artistic richness this city has to offer. Hopefully, we will be seeing and hearing a great deal more of this artist.

o es un secreto que el producto de exportación más amado y reconocido de Argentina es –por ahora- el ubicuo tango. En los últimos diez años la manía por el tango ha infectado alegremente el mundo; con peregrinaciones hacia Argentina de costas lejanas como Japón, Rusia e inclusive ahora China; la tangomanía ha llegado para quedarse.
Ya desde hace años hemos presenciado espectáculos de baile de tango en San Miguel, sin embargo ahora por primera vez tenemos el privilegio de asistir a un “tango teatralizado” gracias a la magnífica interpretación que la porteña Alicia Rappoport dió en el espacio de VC & Friends en Hernández Macías. La velada fue mágica. La primera mitad fue puro tango tradicional con una atmósfera brillante, combinando cabaret y teatro.
Rappoport no sólo nos maravilló con su magnífica voz entrenada para la ópera sino que nos sorprendió con sus dotes actorales ante una sala llena, interpretando la dramática historia de una prostituta, la vida de bajo fondo de Buenos Aires de principios del siglo XX, con sus trágicos y perdidos amoríos. Cantó y actuó los maravillosos clásicos de Carlos Gardel, incluyendo sus milongas sincopadas. Su interpretación fue a la vez histriónica y sensual, manteniendo a la audiencia cautivada.
El acompañamiento musical fue igualmente impresionante, con Aldo Suárez en contrabajo, Mauro Ledesma en piano y el increíble Gabriel Fernández en bandoneón, un instrumento sin el cuál el tango no existiría.
La segunda mitad de la velada fue un Homenaje a Piazzolla con el “Renaceré en Buenos Aires-Nuevo Tango”. Cómo un crítico musical escribió, “Alicia Rappoport es sin lugar a dudas, una de las promotoras principales del “Nuevo Tango”. Astor Piazzolla (1921-1992), compositor reconocido internacionalmente a través del estilo en el que combinó el tango tradicional con elementos del jazz y música clásica junto a letras de famosos poetas como Horacio Ferrer, Eladia Blásquez, Jorge Luis Borges y Pablo Neruda. Nacido en Argentina, Piazzolla interpretó sus composiciones musicales con el instrumento del bandoneón por todo el mundo. El psicólogo argentino Carlos Kuri dijo, “la fusión del tango de Piazzolla, con su gran variedad de elementos musicales occidentales altamente reconocibles fue tan exitosa que produjo un nuevo estilo, que trascendió éstas influencias. Los biógrafos estiman que Piazzolla escribió alrededor de 3000 piezas y grabó alrededor de 500.
Alicia Rappoport comenzó su gira en el teatro del Museo de la Ciudad de Querétaro antes de formar parte del Festival Cervantino de Celaya, y realizó presentaciones también en Dr. Mora, Santa Catarina, San Felipe, Comonfort, dentro del Estado de Guanajuato. Continuará su gira en otras ciudades de México antes de proseguir en Estados Unidos.
Es interesante señalar que ésta artista reside en San Miguel de Allende, ciudad que continúa creciendo con ofertas artísticas. Esperamos poder oír y ver mucho más de ésta gran artista argentina.
